E3 2010: Ghost Trick Developer Interview

The Attract Mode x Nobuooo E3 2010 interview series continues! This interview is with the creators of Ghost Trick, an original title from Capcom for the DS. Director Shu Takumi and Producer Hironobu Takeshita of the Ace Attorney series discuss the creative process behind their upcoming Nintendo DS game, along with their collaboration with composer Masakazu Sugimori of Design Wave. Interpretation is by Capcom localizer Janet Hsu, with additional translation by musician Yoshi Miyamoto.

Ghost Trick was one of my favorite games of the show. If, like me, you were wondering how they created the smooth, flamboyant animation present throughout the trailer, make sure to watch the vid above.

E3 2010: Composer Howard Drossin on the Splatterhouse Soundtrack

I teamed up with Jeriaska from Nobuoo to do some video interviews at E3. Jeriaska just finished editing the first interview, and this is actually one he did all by himself: interviewing, filming, editing, everything(!).

In the interview above, Grammy award-winning composer Howard Drossin discusses the soundtrack for the upcoming Splatterhouse reboot for PS3 and Xbox 360. Drossin touches on his past experiences and how they influenced this project, from working as a composer on 16-bit Sonic titles and other Genesis classics to playing in various metal and punk bands in the 80s.

I'll keep posting the videos as soon as they are edited and ready to go! Thanks to Jeriaska for all his hard work, and to Ben Ross for the pixel-perfect intro and outro.

WE’RE THROWING AN E3 PARTY: Game Night @ Giant Robot Featuring Gaijin Games

Game Night - Pre-E3 Party with - Gaijin Games

Yes, it will be fun as all get out // Yes, you are invited // rsvp on bookface

Forget all those snobby E3 parties for "industry only" folks; we're taking it to the streets (or at least to the parking lot).

We're throwing an E3 party this Monday night at GR2 in the calm before the storm. Come hang out with your friends, relax, and enjoy fun games and delicious food before the flurry of craziness begins Tuesday morning.

This is the first Game Night at Giant Robot. It's a bi-monthly low-key event we're running to help build up the VG community in LA. This first one is all about the excellent Bit.Trip series by Gaijin Games. The equally excellent Gaijin Games crew will be in attendance, so here's your chance to school them at their own games.

More reasons to come:

  • Games projected on the side of the building (!)
  • Bit.Trip themed menu items next door at Giant Robot's restaurant: gr/eats
  • Photo-realistic graphics and life-like conversation system
  • Because I love you

Check out the the press release for the nitty gritty. (Thanks for putting the release together, Martin!)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Pre-E3 Party at GR2

Game Night with Gaijin Games
Monday, June 14, 2010, 7:30 - 10:00 p.m.

GR2
2062 Sawtelle Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90025

In conjunction with the Attract Mode videogame culture shop and LA Game Space, Giant Robot is proud to host Game Night, a pre-E3 party putting a spotlight on Gaijin Games. Gaijin Games is a small indie studio from Santa Cruz, CA that makes the Bit.Trip series of retro pixelated games for the Wii. Their work will be projected on the side of the building and the actual developers will be in attendance to hang out and play with fans. There will also be Bit.Trip-themed food available at gr/eats.

Game Night is a new event that will be taking place at GR2 every two months. Each evening will feature a different developer and its games in a relaxed, community-building setting. Because of the onset of E3, many members of the videogame industry are expected to attend the inaugural gathering, which will be a great opportunity for the game-playing public since most parties related to the Electronic Entertainment Expo are invitation-only.

Giant Robot was born as a Los Angeles-based magazine about Asian, Asian-American, and new hybrid culture in 1994, but has evolved into a full-service pop culture provider with shops and galleries in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City, as well as an online equivalent.

Game Night will take place on June 14 from 7:30 - 10:00. For more information about Game Night, GR2, or Giant Robot magazine, please contact:

Los Angeles, I Love You: LA Collapsed Desires Show Had Biggest, Craziest Crowd Yet

Nullsleep and Trash80 performing live at Synchronicity

Photos by Elliot Trinidad

I'm not sure if you are aware, but LA has had a kind of a bad rep for chip shows: rare shows with small, disinterested crowds in awkward venues. I think that perception was pretty much destroyed Saturday night. Synchronicity was packed wall-to-wall with dancing, jumping, screaming bodies. Nullsleep said it was the best turnout so far on the tour. Alright! The old has passed away; behold the new has come.

Thanks to everyone who came out to support (I finally got a chance to meet 8 Bit Weapon!). We're going to take this momentum and try to start up a regular event. If you have any tips/connections for a venue that you think would be a good fit, fill me in.

Huge thanks to all the performers. They all killed it, did a great job promoting, and are just generally excellent guys. Also, big thanks to our man behind the camera, Jeriaska. He's been working super hard to capture cool happenings in the chiptune and videogame music scenes, and he filmed the whole show. I'll be sure to post any videos he puts together once he has had time to edit and put them up on Vimeo.

June is going to be the best month ever to be in Los Angeles. Every week Attract Mode will be organizing/throwing/attending some really cool event. And it all starts with the Collapsed Desires Tour 2010. This will be the first time Nullsleep has played in LA since the International Chiptune Resistance Tour in 2006! Joining him are three of my favorite chip musicians: Trash80, Mr. Spastic and George Michael Brower. This will be your last chance to catch George before he moves back to the east coast.

LET IT BEGIN
