Playing Tuning with the IndieCade Crowd

IndieCade '09 came to a close last night, and it was officially the best videogame event / conference / festival I've ever been to. It was totally laid back: the perfect environment for everyone to relax and talk shop.

You hear it all the time—and it's completely true—you will never find so much love, goodwill and camaraderie as there is in the independent videogame scene.

Everyone was really excited that Keita Takahashi (creator of Katamari Damacy and Noby Noby Boy) was coming to the festival. That's what happens when you make one of the best games of all time.

Since the fest is on the smaller side, everyone was able to hang out together for the 4 days. After it ended, about 40 of us headed to Robin's house for a surprisingly gourmet barbecue.

While scarfing down a gorgonzola mushroom burger and some salmon, I asked Keita if he had played any of Cactus's games. When he said he hadn't, we busted out a laptop and fired up the Tuning demo.

Soon we had a dozen indies passing around the laptop trying to finish the demo, which in true Cactus fashion is punishingly difficult. Turns out Tuning is a great party game. Who knew?

Noby Noby Boy T-Shirts

Noby Noby Boy T-shirts

They didn’t let me down. Ever since I saw the first demo of Noby Noby Boy in 2007, I’ve been hoping that Panic would partner with Keita Takahashi again to create t–shirts in his signature style. A few of their Katamari Damacy shirts have been in my weekly clothing rotation for a while now, and it’s time they got bumped out for some fresh cotton.

The shirts are available for pre–order now, and will be sold exclusively at Panic.

As a sidenote, I wish I had a Playstation 3 just so I could play all of these quirky downloadable games. Sony, I think you should get rid of the Blu-Ray drive and sell me a PSN–only model for $250.
