… That's what Phil Fish called last week's indie game explosion, otherwise known as FORT90 X BABYCASTLES, and never before has a description been so dead–on accurate. At long last, video games have a place to truly get down and dirty, where things get real. Others have made similar claims, but gaming doesn't get anymore punk rock than this.
Last Thursday night's affair was absolutely mind–blowing for everyone involved, though I'm fairly certain it was our guest of honor who, after all was said done, was the most satisfied. During his speech, Phil noted that he and the rest of Kokoromi had hopes that their Gamma shows (which showcases non–commercial and experimental gameplay) up in the great white north would inspires others to follow suit, elsewhere.

[Everyone welcome Matt to the blog! I've been running this solo for about a year and a half, and I'm sure you can agree that I need a little help with output consistency. Matt is a good friend and has been a huge help with Attract Mode since we teamed up. I'm really excited that he's helping out with the blog now too. Thanks, Matt! - Adam]
Also, hello! Allow me to introduce myself to those who might not be familiar; Matt Hawkins here, otherwise known as "fort90" in various circles (or "FortNinety", depending on completely arbitrary circumstances). In addition to being one of the video game zinesters who calls this place home, as well as being recently appointed the official East Coast Representative, I've also been asked by Adam to help out on the blog, so he can better concentrate on the things that will make Attract Mode even awesomer than it is now, if that can believed! I'm actually one of the few lucky souls to be privy to what lies ahead, coming very soon in fact; let's just say that the word epic doesn't even come close.
Anyhow, last time Adam was the very first to announce my big indie arcade opening, which happens LATER TONIGHT! Yet despite all the anticipation and excitement that's been steadily building up (it's looking to be a full house; just got word from Kunal, the primary architect of the Babycastles empire, that the RSVP list on Facebook has become so packed that it's officially being moved upstairs to accommodate the expected number of bodies!), along with all the shout outs from wonderful friends and supporters, there's still some confusion.
Mostly, one question keeps getting asked: what the heck is Babycastles anyway? How about I simply pull this quote from the Facebook info page:
"Babycastles, New York's first independent games arcade, is named after bite-size portugese cakes in Japan. As a new function of a legendary all-ages venue for Brooklyn music and other local diy-culture [otherwise known as Silent Barn], Babycastles is a wall of six lovingly decorated arcade cabinets that offers a physical place to play games made by amateur and independent game developers."

Attract Mode's east coast warrior, Matt Hawkins, is curating a fine selection of games next month at Babycastles, NYC's best indie game arcade. Most of the games will be there all month, but the opening party is the must-attend if you live anywhere near New York. It's also the only night you can check out Super Hypercube due to all the specialized hardware involved. Check out the details below.
