What are the New Additions to the League of Legends World Championship

The Worlds tournament began in 2011. As noted, the tournament features teams from different regions competing to become the League of Legends champion. Over the years, the game has taken one path with minimal changes. However, an announcement from Riot Games shows that the 2023 Worlds will differ from the years. This is due to the changes made regarding the game. Below are the expected changes in the 2023 League of Legends World Championship.

There will be a Worlds Qualifying Series where the fourth LEC seed and LCS seed compete. This is to determine the team to join the team of competitors in the main tournament. There are 21 teams, with the winner taking the total to 22. Riot Games noted that it would now limit the qualification path to the two regions. However, there are hopes of including more teams and regions.

Are There Changes in the Gameplay Format?

Another change is the elimination format. There will be eight teams during the Play-In Stage. The top two winners from each tier will proceed to the competition, reducing the number from two to four. The number ones from each bracket will be paired with the number twos. Again, the best two from these matches are the teams to proceed to the next stage. The matches are Best-of-Three.

In the League of Legends World Championship, the Group Stage will be replaced by the Swiss Stage. There will be 16 teams at the Swiss Stage. The teams will be subjected to a five-round Swiss Style. Here, teams with similar records, win-loss, will be grouped.

The League of Legends Play Stages

Below are the different stages for determining the Worlds champion.

The Qualification Stage

  • There will be 22 league teams qualifying for the 2023 Worlds tournament.
  • The slots for the teams will be as follows; LCK and LPL regions will have four slots, LCS and LEC regions will have three slots, and VCS and PCS regions will have two slots. The World Qualifying Series CBLOL, LJL, and LLA will each have one of the other slots.

The Round 1 Play-In Stage

  • The stage will offer a double-elimination format between eight teams. The teams will be divided into two competing groups.
  • Teams will be eliminated, and the top two from each bracket will proceed to the next stage.
  • The two lower teams from each tier get disqualified.
  • All the Round 1 Play-In Stage games take place in Best-of-three.

The Round 2 Play-In Stage

  • The Round 2 Play-In Stage involves four teams. These are the top two teams from each tier in the Round 1 Play-In stage.
  • The matches involve the top team in one tier playing the second-placed teams from the other tier.
  • In this stage, only two teams progress to the Swiss Stage.
  • In the Round 1 Play-In Stage, all matches are in Best-of-five.

The Swiss Stage (Group Stage)

  • The two top teams from the previous stage join 14 teams from South Korea, Europe, China, and North America. These teams have direct tournament entry.
  • A total of 16 teams are taken through the Swiss System.
  • Teams from different regions are paired In Round 1 matches.
  • The progressing round two to five games are arranged depending on the team’s loss-win record.
  • The rounds are best-of-three matches.
  • The other matches are best-of-one.
  • Teams having three wins progress to the next stage (Knockout Stage).
  • The other teams with three losses are eliminated.

The Knockout Stage

  • This is the last stage, where eight teams are placed in a single tier, playing against each other.
  • There’s a Side Selection Privilege which allows teams the privilege of choosing the side in the first game. The losing team get Side Selection Privilege in the next round.
  • In the quarterfinals, teams in the first position get the Side Selection Privilege.
  • However, a coin flip determines the privilege in the progressing matches.
  • All the Knockout Stage matches are best-of-five.

What’s the League of Legends Worlds Date, venue, and Prize?

The League of Legends World Championship involves competing for the Summoner’s Cup. There are also additional cash prizes to be won by the teams.
