Gamers, get ready to experience Baldur’s Gate 3 in a whole new way! The highly anticipated RPG will likely support full controller play at launch. That’s right, you can now slay monsters and romance companions with the comfort and ease of a controller in hand. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at what this means for gameplay and what to expect from this exciting new feature. So, grab your controller and let’s dive in!
If you prefer playing games with a controller, you’ll be pleased to know that Baldur’s Gate 3 will likely support controller gameplay on PC with its final release. However, since the game is still in beta, there may be some issues that you’ll encounter if you choose to use a controller. In fact, the developers recommend using a mouse and keyboard instead until they fine-tune the controller experience for the future. So, if you’re planning to play Baldur’s Gate 3 with a controller, be prepared for some bugs and hiccups along the way before the final game’s release. Nonetheless, the game is still worth playing, and you can always switch to keyboard and mouse controls if you need to.
The Stadia version of Baldur’s Gate 3 had impeccable controller support, but unfortunately, Google decided to shut down Stadia due to a lack of profitability. The developers of BG3, Larian Studios, also created Divinity Original Sin 2, which also boasts flawless controller support. As both games are isometric turn-based RPGs, it’s reasonable to expect that Baldur’s Gate 3 will eventually have full controller support, possibly with the full release in 2023.
The Stadia version already had beta UI controller support, so it’s possible that Larian Studios could import this feature to the PC version in a future update. While it’s currently possible to play Baldur’s Gate 3 with a Steam controller gamepad, it’s not yet working perfectly. This is because the BG3 UI is designed for mouse and keyboard input, so Larian Studios would need to release a patch with a controller-friendly UI option to enable smooth controller gameplay.
If you prefer playing Baldur’s Gate 3 with a controller, the Steam Controller is a great option. As mentioned before, the UI of BG3 is designed for a mouse and keyboard, but with the help of Steam Controller, you can enjoy playing the game with a controller. To do this, you need to launch Steam on big picture mode and select Baldur’s Gate 3 from your library. Then, in the controller application options, choose forced on to enable controller support.
After enabling controller support, you can create your own custom mapping of key bindings based on your playstyle. You can also browse pre-made configurations made by other players in the community tab if you prefer not to create your own. Keep in mind that the controller support feature is not perfect yet, and you may encounter some issues with the Steam Controller, but it is still a viable option.
If you plan to play Baldur’s Gate 3 on the Steam Deck, you should be aware that the device can get quite hot during gameplay. Additionally, it is recommended that you use the DirectX 11 version of the game instead of the Vulkan version as there are some graphical issues with Vulkan at the moment. Overall, using the Steam Controller to play Baldur’s Gate 3 is a great way to enjoy the game if you prefer a controller over a keyboard and mouse.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is set to be released on August 31st, 2023 for PC and PS5! You will have the option to either play locally with split-screen co-op and have two players on one PS5, or play online with a group of up to four players.
Unfortunately, an Xbox version will not be available at launch due to technical difficulties, but Larian Studios is actively working on it. Developers have run into issues with Baldur’s Gate 3 split-screen co-op not working to the same standard on both Xbox Series X and S, but they are determined to find a solution. Stay tuned for more updates on the Xbox release date.
Bad news for PS4 and Xbox One gamers who were hoping to play Baldur’s Gate 3. Larian Studios’ executive producer, David Walgrave, has stated that the game will not be available on those consoles. According to Walgrave, he doesn’t believe the current-gen consoles would be able to run the game. While a current-gen release is not entirely ruled out, it appears more likely that the game will only be available on next-gen consoles.
In conclusion, Baldur’s Gate 3 is finally coming out of early access and will be released on PC and PS5 on August 31, 2023. Although Xbox One and PS4 gamers won’t be able to play the game, Larian Studios is working on toning down the game’s textures for a current-gen console release. Additionally, controller support will likely be available for PS5 and PC at launch but it is still yet to be revealed. Stay tuned for more updates and announcements regarding the highly anticipated Baldur’s Gate 3.
